Displaying your medals at home is a powerful way to celebrate your achievements. It keeps you motivated and can inspire others. Whether from sports, work, or academics, they remind you of your dedication.
In this article, we'll explore 5 creative ways to display your medals and add a personal touch to your home decor. Let’s dive in!
Box Frame
One of the easiest ways to display your medals is by framing them. There are multiple companies that sell box frames, specifically designed for medals, although they can be somewhat expensive.
But don’t worry! There are simple ways to make your own frame at a fraction of the cost. All you need is:
- A regular shadow box frame that allows the medals to hang freely without being squashed. Consider using your special shape medals to highlight their unique design.
- Sturdy cardboard or thin MDF boards.
- Scissors or a tool to pierce the cardboard or thin MDF.
- Pencil.
- Adhesive tape.
Show off your special shape medals in a box frame
Instructions:
- Prepare the backing: Remove the original backing of the original frame and replace it with the sturdy cardboard or thin MDF wood board.
- Cut the new backing to fit the frame. If desired, you can paint it or cover it with fabric to give it a more elegant touch.
- Position the medals: Arrange the medals on the backing and use a pencil to mark where the ribbons will go through.
- Make the holes: Use your chosen tool to pierce holes at the marked points.
- Secure the medals: Thread each medal’s ribbon through the holes, ensuring the medal hangs on the front side.
- Secure the ribbons at the back: Remember to use adhesive tape and trim any excess.
- Assemble the frame: Place the backing with the medals into the frame and secure it properly.
Medal Rack
If you need a special place to display your medal collection, consider using a rack. This way, you won’t just be showcasing the medals, but also the ribbons, which are usually personalised and tell their own story.
If this idea catches your interest, you’ll need the following materials:
- Curtain rod. This can be found at any home improvement store.
- Wall brackets to hold the curtain rod.
- Screws to secure the rod to the wall.
- Drill.
- Spirit level
- Pencil
Instructions:
- Find a spot on the wall where you want to display the medals. Try to choose a large wall to allow more space.
- Mark the spots for installing the brackets with the pencil. Make sure to use your spirit level to ensure they’re straight.
- Install the brackets with the drill. Remember, if you don’t feel comfortable doing this type of work yourself, it’s important to seek professional help.
- Place the curtain rod and hang your medals evenly.
Use Magnets
Attaching magnets to your medals is also a creative way to display them at home. Plus, it’s very easy to do. All you need is:
- Disc magnets
- Metal surface: If you don’t want to put your medals on the fridge, you could buy a metal board or a galvanised steel sheet from a hardware store.
Instructions:
- Prepare the base: Whether you’re attaching your medals to the fridge, a baking tray, or any other type of metal board, it’s important to thoroughly clean the surface. Then, make sure it’s completely dry.
- Attach the magnets: Glue a small magnet to the back of the medal*.
*Please note that metal medals are heavier and will probably require 2–3 magnets. For this idea, we recommend using acrylic medals, as they tend to be lighter and can also be very stylish.
- Arrange the medals: Place the medals however you like. You can play with their size or even organise them by event
Wind Chime
If you’re looking for other fun ideas to display your medal collection at home, consider making a wind chime. Here’s what you’ll need:
- String or cord. Make sure it’s strong enough to hold the weight of your medals.
- Metal ring for the base
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Select the medals. Consider using lightweight medals.
- Cut the string. Cut multiple pieces of string to different lengths.
- Thread each string through the hole in the medal. Tie a knot at the top to secure it. If your medals don’t have holes, you can drill them. Just ensure the holes are positioned so that the medals hang evenly.
- Attach the medals to the hanging base.
- Hang the wind chime. Find a spot where you spend a lot of time, so you can celebrate your achievements each time you're there.
Coin Case Display
If you’re not so keen on DIY projects, you can also buy a coin case and use it to display your medals.
We recommend looking for coin cases with a glass or acrylic lid to protect your medals from dust and humidity. Additionally, make sure the coin case has compartments that match the size of your medals or are adjustable.
Whether your medals are made of metal, acrylic, or renewable materials, it’s essential to clean them with a soft cloth to remove dust before storing them. Once your medals are clean, ensure you organise them by size, colour, or importance.
Remember to check that your medals are securely in place and don’t shift around when you close the coin case.
Displaying Your Medals with Style
Medals are something we’re inherently proud of, so we hope you’ll find a way to show yours off at home!
Remember that there are several great ways to display them at home and celebrate your achievements every day. For example, you can opt for a box frame, use magnets, or buy a coin case. If you're feeling creative, you could also try making a wind chime.
